This slideshow is divided into three groups:
These can be some of the most enjoyable portraits to carve. They do create quite a challenge as the very youngest children and babies have very subtle features, such as character lines, that can be used to show their personality.
These are usually of adults. Portraying their personality is easier as they have developed character lines and features. Older people such as grandparents have lots of character in their faces.
These are usually two or three profiles such as brothers and sisters, mothers and their children or fathers and their children.
The most profiles that I have carved on to a single cameo is the four sisters cameo crested for Castelnuovo d’ Aiassa Designs, California.
Side profile or face-on Cameo portraits
The 'Side on' profile is the design that is traditionally associated with Cameo carvings. Most Antique cameos are carved in this manner. There are two reasons for this, the first is that these carvings are easier to do and the second is that special effects can be achieved using multi layered agates.
The 'Face-on' design is much more of a challenge for the cameo carver. There is more work needed to complete the carving. However of more importance is the fact that it is much harder to achieve personality and character.
A portrait painter can use color to create a sense of depth. Cameo carving does not have that luxury so special techniques are used to create the illusion of depth needed for a realistic portrait carving. This is where the skill of the experienced Cameo artist is most used.
Gareth Eckley has spent many hours studying fine art, sculpture and cameo work. Great portrait artists such as Titian, Vermeer, Michaelangelo and Pistrucci altered the proportions of various parts of the face to create a heightened sense of super reality. Gareth uses these principles in his portrait carvings.
